A farmer from Bellevue, Ohio had a problem. He could not find a tillage tool that was able to penetrate the ground deep enough, especially with his small tractor.
We only had the Oliver 1855 to pull with. That was the biggest tractor we had at the time. We couldn’t get to the depth we wanted with a regular chisel plow or the Soil Saver. We couldn’t get it in the ground and then we couldn’t pull it, even if we borrowed a neighbor’s tractor to get more horsepower on it,” he said. “Even with the Soil Saver I couldn’t get the depth I wanted. Everybody goes for the hard pan or the plow pan, but I wanted to get down deeper to get the roots down.”
This was Jeff Sberna's motivation to create the Chisel Ripper! His machinery breaks apart soils from 13 to 15 inches deep using only 20-25 horsepower per shank (depending on soil conditions) and at speeds of more than 8 mph. The FarmBuilt Chisel Ripper leaves firm dirt on either side of the shanks while residue is aerated and mixed with the top 3 to 4 inches of soil.
